What to look for on a roof paint label
- "100% pure acrylic" — not "acrylic" alone, which can mean styrenated.
- Specified DFT (dry film thickness, typically 60–80μm per coat for roof acrylics).
- Spread rate honest enough to ask about — 4–6 m²/L for roof tile, slightly more on smooth IBR.
- Recoatable — premium roof paints can be over-coated in 5–7 years without strip-back.
System matters more than product
A premium roof paint applied over a poorly prepped surface will fail in 18 months. A mid-grade paint applied over a properly cleaned, primed and double-coated surface can outperform the premium.
