Quick answer: Enamel paint outlasts standard paint on high-traffic surfaces — doors, trim, furniture, kitchen cabinets — because its resin system cures to a harder, more scuff-resistant film. Rhinoluxe's enamel range covers gloss, sheen and eggshell finishes for the wear demands of SA homes and trade environments.
If a surface gets touched, washed, knocked, or rubbed regularly, enamel is the right choice over standard PVA. Here's why, and which enamel fits which job.
What makes enamel different
Standard wall paints use soft resin systems optimised for coverage and easy application. They mark easily and don't tolerate frequent washing. Enamel paints use harder resin systems (alkyd in solvent-based, modified acrylic in water-based) that cure to a hard, washable film. The trade-off: enamel needs more careful application, longer cure times, but lasts 2–3× longer on high-wear surfaces.
Where enamel beats PVA
- Doors — daily contact, slamming, fingerprints. Enamel washes clean; PVA marks permanently.
- Skirtings and trim — scuffed by shoes, vacuum cleaners. Enamel resists; PVA chalks.
- Kitchen cabinetry — grease, steam, washing. Enamel holds up; PVA absorbs and stains.
- Bathroom trim — moisture, splashes. Enamel water-resistant; PVA fails.
- Window frames (interior) — condensation, sun on south-facing rooms.
- Stairs and balustrades — heavy contact, abrasion.
- Furniture — daily use, drinks, cleaning chemicals.
- Concrete floors (low-traffic indoor) — use Concrete Enamel specifically.
Choosing the right Rhinoluxe enamel for the job
| Surface | Recommended product | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Wooden doors, trim, furniture | High Gloss Enamel | Hard, washable, premium look |
| Indoor walls in wet areas | High Sheen Enamel | Water-based, lower VOC, washable |
| Burglar bars, modern matte cabinetry | Eggshell Enamel | Subtle matt finish, still washable |
| Concrete floors (stoeps, garages) | Concrete Enamel | Engineered for foot traffic |
| Metal gates, fences | High Gloss + ZP4 primer | Hard outdoor film + rust protection |
Application notes
Enamel paints require more careful application than PVA — surface prep matters more, recoat times are longer, and the right brush or roller makes a visible difference. See our guide to applying enamel without brush marks.
