10-year paint warranty

10-Year Paint Warranty — What It Actually Covers (SA Guide)

Quick answer: Rhinoluxe Shield's 10-year warranty covers the paint's performance — UV stability, flexibility, water resistance, and adhesion — when applied to spec. Cheap paints that need recoating every 2–3 years cost dramatically more in labour over the same period. Here's the technical reasoning, what's covered, and how to make a claim.

Why a 10-year warranty is a real spec, not marketing

To offer a genuine 10-year guarantee, a paint must be formulated with 100% pure acrylic resins. Many mid-tier paints use styrenated acrylics to lower costs. While these perform indoors, they yellow and become brittle under high UV. Rhinoluxe Shield uses UV-stable pure-acrylic resins that retain their molecular flexibility despite years of direct South African sun.

The 4 specs behind a 10-year warranty

1. Pure acrylic resins

Standard acrylic emulsions go brittle in 2–3 years of SA UV. Pure acrylics retain elasticity for the full warranty period.

2. High-build dry film thickness (DFT)

Shield requires a 2-coat application reaching 35–45 microns DFT per coat. That density is what blocks driving rain and accommodates thermal movement.

3. Salt-air resistance for coastal SA

Coastal Cape Town, Garden Route and KZN homes face constant salt-air abrasion. Shield's formulation resists salt-spray degradation, which is why it's specified for Table View, Bloubergstrand, Melkbosstrand and similar coastal zones.

4. Gap-bridging elasticity

SA homes thermally cycle daily. Bricks and concrete expand and contract. Shield stretches over hairline cracks as they open and close — without the elasticity, paint cracks on the first movement cycle and water gets in.

Lifecycle cost — why cheap paint is expensive

Take a typical 100 m² roof. A budget paint at half the per-litre price needs recoating every 2.5 years. Shield needs recoating at year 10. Over a decade:

  • Budget paint: 4 recoats × (paint + labour + scaffold) — labour is the biggest cost on every cycle
  • Shield: 1 application + warranty cover. No mid-cycle repaint labour at all.

The labour saving alone typically pays for the premium on Shield within the first repaint cycle.

How Rhinoluxe Shield compares to other SA warranted paints

Most SA mass-market exterior paints (Plascon, Dulux, Duram, Nova) carry warranties between 5 and 15 years on their premium lines. Shield's 10-year sits in the middle — but the differences are in the fine print: substrate types covered, climate exceptions, claim requirements, and what's considered "applied to spec." Always read the warranty terms on the product page or download the warranty PDF before you buy.

What's covered (and what isn't)

Covered: UV-related fading and chalking, loss of elasticity, peeling and flaking when applied per spec, water penetration through the coating film.

Not covered: failures caused by substrate movement beyond design tolerance, application under wrong-spec primer or no primer where required, application below specified DFT, application outside temperature/humidity ranges, mechanical damage (impact, abrasion), structural cracks wider than the elastomeric tolerance.

How to claim

If you believe Shield has failed under warranty: contact Rhinoluxe with the original proof of purchase, application records (date, primer used, number of coats, applicator), and photos of the failure. Our technical team will assess and advise next steps. Email shop@rhinoluxe.co.za or call +27 84 985 6141.
