Rhinoluxe Shield — SA's 10-Year Waterproof Paint Guide

Quick answer: Rhinoluxe Shield is a pure-acrylic elastomeric waterproof paint engineered for South African roofs and walls. It covers 6–8 m² per litre per coat, achieves 35–45 μm DFT per coat in a two-coat system, carries a 10-year warranty, and is UV- and salt-air resistant for coastal conditions like Table View, Bloubergstrand and Melkbosstrand. Order online with national delivery or collect at our paint shops in Table View, Cape Town or Edenvale, Johannesburg.

What is Rhinoluxe Shield?

Rhinoluxe Shield is a 100% pure-acrylic, water-based elastomeric coating that forms a flexible, waterproof membrane on roofs and walls. Unlike standard exterior paints (which sit on the surface and crack as the substrate moves), Shield stretches with hairline cracks and seals them. The pure-acrylic resin system gives it the UV stability and salt-air resistance you need for SA coastal and Highveld conditions.

Where Shield fits — substrates and use cases

Shield is rated for: cement roof tiles (new or weathered), fibre-cement sheeting, IBR and corrugated metal roofing (over an appropriate primer), primed plastered walls, parapet walls, nail heads and roofing bolts. It's ideal for both new construction and remediation work — including sealing leaking flashings, repairing craze cracking, and waterproofing flat concrete roofs.

Coverage, DFT and how much you need

Per the TDS, Shield covers 6–8 m² per litre per coat. A correct two-coat system achieves 35–45 microns of dry film thickness per coat. For a 100 m² roof you'll need approximately 25–35 litres total (12.5–17.5 L per coat). Buy the next size up to account for substrate absorption — porous concrete or weathered tiles soak more.

How to apply (the short version)

  1. Clean the substrate. Remove all dirt, chalk, loose paint, oils. Pressure wash if needed and let dry.
  2. Repair cracks. Hairline cracks Shield handles; larger movement cracks need patching first.
  3. Prime where required. Bare metal, very porous concrete, or chalking surfaces benefit from an appropriate primer.
  4. Apply Coat 1 to spec. Brush, roller, or airless spray. Maintain wet edge.
  5. Let dry to recoat window. Touch-dry typically 30 minutes; recoat after 2–4 hours depending on temperature and humidity.
  6. Apply Coat 2 to spec. Same method, perpendicular direction to Coat 1 for full coverage.
  7. Let cure. Full cure before exposure to driving rain.

Comparison with other Rhinoluxe waterproofing products

Product Type Best for
Shield Pure-acrylic elastomeric Most roof and wall waterproofing on standard substrates
Megaflex Cementitious membrane Crack-bridging on parapets, balconies, structural movement zones
Fiber Coat Fibre-reinforced acrylic Detailed concrete work needing extra tensile strength
Heat Reflect Reflective roof coating Sun-exposed roofs where indoor temperature matters

The 10-year warranty

Shield carries a 10-year performance warranty when applied to spec (two coats, 35–45 μm DFT per coat, correct primer where required, proper surface prep). Details on what's covered are on the Warranty page; see the deep-dive on warranty value for the lifecycle cost calculation.

FAQ

Does Shield work on a coastal home? Yes. Shield is engineered with UV-resistant resins for coastal salt-air conditions in Table View, Bloubergstrand, Melkbosstrand and the broader Western Cape coast.

Can I apply Shield in winter? Apply when substrate temperatures are within the TDS application range, the substrate is dry, and there's no rain forecast in the curing window. In the Cape, summer and early autumn are ideal before winter rains arrive.

What colour options are there? Shield is available in white and a range of tints suitable for tinting at our paint shops. For tile colours like terracotta or green oxide, see the product page.

Where can I buy Shield? Order online at rhinoluxe.co.za with national delivery, or visit our paint shops at 143 Blaauwberg Road, Table View, Cape Town or 5a Betschana Road, Sebenza, Edenvale, Johannesburg.
