What Shield is
Shield is a high-binder, elastomeric acrylic coating that cures into a continuous flexible film. The film stretches over hairline cracks up to about 2 millimetres (mm), sheds water under driving rain, and holds colour under UV. It is 100 percent (%) waterproof once cured and salt-air resistant, which suits coastal homes.
Where to use Shield
Use Shield on exterior plaster walls, boundary walls and parapets. For flat and low-pitch roofs use Fiber Coat; for interior damp and rising-damp faces use Damp Proof; below ground use Megaflex cementitious waterproofing; and in showers or under tiles use Megaflex, not Shield.
Shield vs Fiber Coat
Shield is the wall membrane; Fiber Coat is the roof membrane. Shield gives a smooth flexible film for vertical wall surfaces. Fiber Coat adds fibre reinforcement for the extra crack-bridging that flat and low-pitch roofs need where water sits. Both are UV-stable.
Shield vs Premium Roof & Wall
Shield waterproofs; Premium Roof & Wall decorates. Shield is a waterproofing membrane. Premium Roof & Wall is a UV-stable, long-lasting decorative roof and wall coat, but it is not a waterproofing product. Where the wall needs to keep water out, use Shield; where it only needs a durable colour coat, use Premium Roof & Wall.
Coverage and how to apply Shield
Apply two coats at roughly 1 litre per 3 to 5 square metres (m²) per coat over a clean, primed surface. As a worked example, a 60 m² wall needs about 24 to 40 litres over two coats. Prime bare or powdery plaster with Solvent-Based Plaster Primer first. Allow the first coat to dry, typically 4 to 6 hours at 23 degrees Celsius (°C), before the second, and do not apply in rain or when rain is expected before the film dries.
Shield colours
Shield is available in a range of tints for walls, parapets and tiled or fibre-cement roofs, so the waterproof layer doubles as the decorative finish. Lighter tints reflect more heat than dark ones on a sun-exposed surface.
What Shield will not fix
Shield will not cure rising damp, bridge structural cracks over about 2 mm, or bond to a dirty or chalky wall. Rising damp needs a damp-proof course or Damp Proof; wide cracks need a flexible filler first.
How long Shield lasts
