Etch Primer: self-etching primer for galvanised, aluminium and difficult metals

Rhinoluxe Etch Primer is a self-etching metal primer that chemically bites into smooth, non-ferrous metals — galvanised iron, aluminium and other tricky surfaces — to create the grip that ordinary primers cannot. It leaves a keyed, corrosion-resistant base so topcoats and enamels hold instead of peeling. Available in Etch Black, Etch Red and Etch Grey.

Key Benefits

  • Self-etching adhesion. Bites into galvanised, aluminium and smooth metal for a mechanical key.
  • Stops peeling. Gives topcoats a sound base on surfaces where normal primers fail.
  • Corrosion resistant. Protects the metal beneath the finish.
  • For difficult metals. Galvanised iron, aluminium and other non-ferrous surfaces.
  • Three shades. Etch Black, Etch Red and Etch Grey.

Technical Overview

Etch Primer contains an acid component that reacts with the metal surface as it dries, micro-etching it to form a chemical and mechanical bond. This is essential on galvanised iron and aluminium, which are too smooth and passive for standard primers to grip — without an etch primer, topcoats lift and flake. The result is a keyed, passivated base ready for undercoats and enamel topcoats.

Technical Guidance

Make sure the metal is clean, dry and free of grease and oxidation. Apply a thin, even coat of Etch Primer and let it react and dry before over-coating with your undercoat or topcoat. Do not apply it too thickly — a thin etch coat gives the best adhesion. Follow with a metal primer or enamel for a full system.
