Concrete Floor Paint in South Africa: Indoor & Outdoor

Concrete floor paint is a hard-wearing coating that seals and colours cement and concrete floors, and the right one depends on where the floor is: Concrete Enamel for indoor and outdoor floors that see sun, and 1K Polyurethane for interior floors under heavy traffic. Both outlast ordinary paint on a floor because they are built for foot traffic, tyres and scuffing. This guide covers which to use where, whether painting concrete is worth it, and how to prep so the coating lasts.

What is the best paint for concrete floors?

The best paint for a concrete floor is a floor-grade concrete enamel or polyurethane, matched to the floor's location and traffic. Use this quick guide:

Concrete floor Best product
Outdoor — stoep, patio, walkway, garage apron Concrete Enamel (UV stable)
Indoor & outdoor general concrete Concrete Enamel
Interior high-traffic — garage, workshop, warehouse 1K Polyurethane
Chalky or dusty concrete (before painting) Clear Bonding Liquid primer first

Concrete Enamel holds its colour under ultraviolet (UV) light and works inside and out; 1K Polyurethane gives a harder, more abrasion-resistant film for interior floors that never see sun.

Is painting a concrete floor a good idea?

Yes, painting a concrete floor is a good idea when you use a floor-grade coating and prepare the slab properly. A sealed concrete floor is easier to clean, resists dusting and staining, brightens a dark garage or patio, and costs far less than tiling or laying a new screed. The two things that decide the result are choosing a floor coating (not wall paint) and preparing the slab. Skip either and the paint powders or peels.

Do I need to prime a concrete floor before painting?

Yes, prime a concrete floor when it is chalky, dusty, porous or newly laid, because the primer binds the loose surface and stops the topcoat peeling. A sound, previously painted floor in good condition can be recoated after a thorough clean and a light sand. Bare, powdery or new concrete needs Clear Bonding Liquid first to stabilise the surface and lock in adhesion. New concrete must cure for about 28 days before any coating.

Interior vs outdoor concrete floor paint

Outdoor concrete needs a UV-stable coating; interior high-traffic concrete needs the hardest film. A patio, stoep or open garage apron takes Concrete Enamel, which will not chalk in the sun. An enclosed garage, workshop or warehouse floor — out of the sun but under constant tyre and foot traffic — takes 1K Polyurethane for maximum abrasion resistance. For a stoep specifically, see stoep paint and stoep enamel.

How do you dust-proof a concrete floor?

To dust-proof a concrete floor, seal it — either with a bonding sealer or a floor coating — so the surface stops shedding fine grey powder. Bare concrete dusts because the weak top layer breaks down underfoot. Priming with Clear Bonding Liquid binds that surface; a full coat of Concrete Enamel or 1K Polyurethane then gives a sealed, wipe-clean floor. A dust-proofed floor keeps garages, storerooms and workshops far cleaner.

Non-slip and high-traffic floors

For a non-slip concrete floor, add a fine anti-slip aggregate to the topcoat, or broadcast it between coats, on ramps, steps and wet areas. Warehouse, factory and workshop floors that carry the heaviest traffic take 1K Polyurethane for its hard, abrasion-resistant film. Keep the coats thin and even; a floor built up too thick is more likely to chip at the edges.

How long does concrete floor paint last?

A concrete floor coating lasts about 5 to 10 years over sound prep before it needs a refresher coat, with the traffic lanes wearing first. Indoor polyurethane on a workshop floor and concrete enamel on a sheltered patio sit at the longer end; a garage door path or a sun-baked patio wears sooner. Catch the wear early, while the film is thinning rather than gone, and a single refresher coat restores it.

How much concrete floor paint do you need?

Budget about 1 litre (L) per 4 to 6 square metres (m²) per coat on a sealed slab, over two coats. Bare or porous concrete drinks the first coat and covers less, so prime it first to hold coverage. Measure the floor, double the area for two coats, and add about 10% for waste.

How to paint a concrete floor

Clean off dust, grease and flaking paint; let new concrete cure for about 28 days; repair cracks; prime chalky or porous concrete with Clear Bonding Liquid; cut in the edges; then roll the field in two thin coats, letting each dry. Allow full cure before heavy traffic. The step-by-step is in how to paint a concrete floor.
